I wish I had...

a doraemon style time machine - the kind that fits in your desk drawer.

Then I can just jump in it and go back 30 years in order to understand GPSS, a program that nobody has used since the 1970s.

It's like the Curta mechanical calculator, really, but way less elegant. Urgh. I hate obsolete computer software that tries to make your life "easier" by hiding all its logic.

speaking of procrastinators...

in terry pratchett's thief of time, there is a sect of ancient and miffical monks called the History Monks, who go around smoothing out the wrinkles of time and repairing broken bits of history, making sure that the space-time continuum is continuuum.

anyway, a tool they use is the procrastinator, which can be wound up to store time, and which can then be wound out to release extra time for the person using it, so that, e.g., they can move away from some armed men very very quickly.

yeah that's all i wanted to say. i guess no profound insight...
